This book starts from the premise that while teaching is an art, it also relies on the mastery and application of skills. Thus there is an emphasis on techniques. Underlying these techniques are five general principles. The techniques are based on research, much observation and close analysis of lessons.
The result is a toolbox of ideas that theoretically could be applied by anyone. However, some techniques implicitly assume that the teacher has enough time in which to implement them.
Some techniques will appear obvious so the seasoned teacher -- or at least should do. Nevertheless, it would have been remiss of the author to omit them.
The chapters have useful notes and there is a detailed index, though chapter summaries would have been welcome, as would an index of the techniques. This book will prove to be a useful manual for new teachers and a welcome reminder to old hands.
